Une peau mixte a grasse

Combination skin is common, but it is not a dermatological entity in the same way as oily or dry skin. Our guide explains how to care for your combination skin with the right skincare routine.

What is combination skin and what are its symptoms?

Combination skin is characterized by dry skin all over the face, except for the middle part, known as the T-zone, where the skin is oily. In combination skin, the forehead, nose and chin have a shiny appearance, while the rest of the face has a normal, even scaly appearance.

Oily skin and combination skin may seem quite similar, but each requires its own adapted skin care routine. In fact, as explained above, combination skin is characterized by both dry and oily parts, depending on the area of the face, whereas oily skin affects the whole face. How do you tell the difference between dry and combination skin?

Dry skin is characterized by feelings of tightness, itching, redness and sometimes even flaking. Dry skin is linked to a lack of sebum, whereas combination skin does not really suffer from an imbalance, but has an unstable equilibrium. Unlike combination skin, dry skin is visible on all parts of the face, with no shiny areas.

How to care for combination skin

Caring for combination skin can be more difficult, as this skin type combines the needs of both dry and oily skin. It is recommended to use products specifically for combination skin to treat the T-zone as oily skin and the rest of the face as dry skin.

Bioderma's Sébium range offers a range of dermatological skincare products designed to care for combination skin.

  • Pore Refiner helps visibly tighten pores while preserving skin radiance.
  • Mat Control provides light hydration and mattifies the skin, reducing excess shine.

The use of aggressive products is strongly discouraged, as it can worsen the symptoms of combination skin. In fact, combination skin needs its own skincare routine to help maintain a healthy appearance and ideal moisture levels.

Which ingredients are best suited to a skincare routine for combination skin?

Certain ingredients are particularly recommended for combination skin:

  • Hyaluronic acid: helps restore the skin's natural hydration
  • Salicylic acid: a beta-hydroxy acid that smoothes skin texture
  • Niacinamide: helps soothe feelings of tightness
  • Ceramides: restore and maintain the skin's protective barrier

How can I reduce the shiny appearance of the T-zone?

To reduce the shiny appearance of the T-zone, the central area of the face needs to be treated in the same way as oily skin. To do this, we recommend products that are effective in treating hyperseborrhea, combined with mattifying properties

Bioderma's Sébium matifying skincare range is specifically designed to reduce the shiny appearance of the T-zone. It combines moisturizing and mattifying properties. Its long-term results reduce skin shine and diminish the appearance of imperfections.
